How you can overcome a fear of Dogs – Part 1 of 2

If you’re a regular to my Blog you’ve probably already heard how Cory used to be scared of Dogs until I arrived in the family.  I love everyone, and I hope to become a Therapy Dog as I get a little older, but I know not all experiences people have with Dogs are positive…..

Recently I heard  a great story of a man who was terrified of Dogs, but who discovered that with proper education, anyone can become a dog person.

Having been chased (and almost bitten) as a baby, comedian Steve Hofstetter was scared of dogs – until he married a shelter volunteer.

The change has been remarkable – a few weeks ago, they adopted an adorable 6-year-old rescue beagle/dachshund mix (now named Bea Arthur), and now he is encouraging others to do the same.

Yay, Bea has a Squirrel toy just like me! :)

Squirrel was one of my first toys, still love playing with him! :)

This was a story I had to explore some more, so I decided I’d do my very first interview!  I wonder how many people have been interviewed by a Dog? :)

1)  So Steve, tell me why you were scared of us fluffy/furry balls of fun?
You’re not all fluffy balls of fun. Furry, yes – but some of you bite, including the one that chased me when I was a kid. It’s not your fault though – every time a human does something stupid, you can’t blame all of us.
2)  What made you decide we might not all be so scary after all?
I was educated. I saw real life examples of some dogs that had been through hell and still came out wonderfully friendly. I realized it’s the owners who can be at fault, not the dogs.
3)  How did you know what breed to choose, cos we’re all very different – some of us like to go shopping carried in purses (not me of course), some like to herd sheep (more me, I think), some like to play in the water…..
We needed a smaller breed since our apartment is small – but honestly it was more about the personality than the breed. I find judging breeds is the equivalent of racism – while many breeds have certain tendencies, any dog can be an exception. Bea is half Beagle half Dachshund, and she’s super quiet – very rare for either.
4)  Tell me why you chose Bea, especially as she didn’t speak English (she was rescued from Puerto Rico), has this been a problem?
Bea had the perfect temperament. She was a lump, just like us – and if she did speak English, that’d be too scary to address. Though I think I’d take her on the road with me.
5)  Does she like her new name (Steve and Sarah re-named her when she arrived)?
She likes anything that means we’re paying attention to her. We could have named her “foot cream” and she’d love it because we’re calling her.
6)  What does Bea do that makes you smile?
Just about everything. But her squiggling around on her back to scratch on our carpet is particularly funny.
7)  Recently it was ‘Take Your Dog to Work Day’ – did Bea go with you to work?
I’m new to the dog community, so I don’t know about that stuff. But considering I write jokes in my living room, sure, she was there. She did go to work with Sara once, but not again – she got nothing done. Too distracted by everyone coming over and marveling at how cute and quiet Bea was.
8)  Who spoils Bea the most, you or your wife?  Has Bea worked out who’s the ‘soft touch’?
Sara definitely does, but that’s because she does more training (and with training come treats). We’re both pretty good about keeping to the plan. No couch or bed, food at specified times, and attention only when she’s good. It’s strict, yes, but Bea will be better for it.

Find out more about Steve’s journey with Bea in the second part of this interview. I got a little carried away and asked lots of questions! Tee Hee I’m just an inquisitive pup! :)

You can also read more on Steve’s Blog that he’s started writing about his joy at becoming a Dog Lover! Enjoy :)
