Therapy Dog Training – I passed stage one! Woohoo!!

Wednesday was a big day, it was the first test in the process to become a Therapy Dog!!

We had to go for an assessment at the vets, well, I was getting assessed, Mum was just coming for the ride……

This is me practising being a Good Boy ready for the test....

As we arrived I heard someone ask Mum who she had with her, so I popped my paws onto the counter so they could see me  – I was also checking to see if that Cat was there that had been hanging around last time – Doh!!  No sign of the Cat…….

So, It started with a weigh-in – my svelte-like 47lbs was met with approval.  Oh, hold on, Mum said that wasn’t part of the test, that was just out of interest, anyway at least there won’t be any restrictions on Dentastix, so that’s good!

Next I had to go and wait for Dr Rick in the little room, he’s been my vet since the beginning and knows me really well.  I gave him my usual big welcome, he got down on the floor, so I got down lower to see if he wanted to play – he’s so much fun, we had a little play.

Next he got the treats out, this usually means he’s gonna do something sneaky, but surprisingly this time it wasn’t the case – all I had to do was sit and I got the treats, piece of cake for me.  I wonder if taking treats nicely was part of the test?  I’m gonna tell Mum I need to keep practising this skill in case it’s required when we go to do Therapy work – Tee Hee…..

I think actually he tested me for certain things that I didn’t even realise he was testing?  But I was very happy to hear I’d passed!!

He filled in some forms for Mum and said I was a wonderful candidate as a Furry Friend – Woohoo!!  If Mum had a tail I think she’d have been wagging hers too!! :)

Woohoo Mum!! Can't wait until Dad gets home to tell him the news!! :)

Now that I’ve passed this part I think Mum has to submit all the forms and then we go to see the Animal Behaviourist for an assessment – Yay!! I’m so excited!! :)

I’m with you, the calm around new people sure is difficult – especially if they’ve rung the doorbell!! Oh No! But hopefully I’ll master it eventually……. :)

  8. YES!!! I know you are going to be wonderful at it. My Vickie and I just got back from the class to teach the humans how to be good therapy partners. Me and her got to play “Bad Therapy dog and partner” It was fun being bad…..My Vickie buttoned her shirt up wrong, had her hair crazy and pretened she was sneezing all over everyone. I got to jump on people and eat food off the shelf and take little fake dogs they had out for them, oh yeah and just before we went in MY Vickie slathered some mud on my side and we told everyone I had rolled in doo doo. It was pretty funny.. WE did a great job being BAD THERAPY TEAM.

Did I ever tell you that you and Sir George http://bobtailgeorge.blogspot.com/ look a like. Well, at least when Sr George was your age. If you go check out his blog, go back to about 6 months ago and you will see how much you two looked alike. He looks older now and his hair is different but when he was your age, you coulda been twins.

Anyway buddy, I am off to the river to wash off the mud.

    Take care

    • Hey Bert,

Sorry I didn’t reply sooner, Cosmo and I were kinda busy this weekend and I didn’t get much computer time! :)

You made me chuckle with your ‘bad therapy dog and partner’ act, I bet you enjoyed playing that, especially as you got to be covered in mud, although I probably wouldn’t like that cos I’m kinda fussy about things on my coat! Twigs aren’t even allowed!! :) Mum says I’m OCD!?

Wow, Sir George (V. posh name! – I like it!) sure does look like me when he was a little younger, I think OES are related to my breed – I know they like to play with Sheep too! He looks like he has lots of fun, although I don’t really understand how he writes, seems like a foreign language to me?

Hope you had a fun time in the river getting clean buddy,

      Snoops :)

  9. Congrats on passing that test! Hope it all goes well for you. I am seeing a behaviourist too! But it is because I am not being as good. Mine recommended more play time. Check out my blog to see what I am doing.

Sounds to me like you’ve got it all figured out, cos you get your behaviourist to recommend ‘more’ play time – sweet!! Wish I could come and play with you……

      Have fun,

      Snoops :)

  10. Congrats on passing phase 1 Snoopy! Good luck with the rest. You will make a great therapy dawg!

  12. Kudos, Snoopy, and congrats!

You’ve passed the first stage of this process and there is no reason why you should not pass the rest of the way. After all, you do seem to be just the sort of a dog to work therapeutic magic on the needy.
