How To Train A Therapy Dog?

Mum and Dad are often asked what goes into training a Therapy Dog?

So I thought every now and then on my blog I’ll share some of the things that we did as I was growing up to help me become qualified as a Therapy Dog….

Socialization – Don’t Be Afraid of new things:

It was fun riding around in the cart!! :)

Mum and Dad took me everywhere they could right from when I was little to get me used to new environments – hardware stores that allow pets are a great place – and I had lots of fun :)

  1. You look good in a cart, Snoopy! I LOVE to go shopping too. Mom takes me everywhere dogs are allowed to go…the bank is really good because the treats there are ginormous!

  5. What a cute puppy you were!! I love strange places, but Torrey has a hard time. Despite the fact that she has been taken everywhere since she was little. It must be in the breed too.

  6. Sounds a bit like what to do with a Kuvasz puppy so they don’t become aggressive – but in Europe we always went everywhere so it was easy, here in the US it is a bit more difficult to find places doggies can go. You sure were a cute pup :)

  8. I put Sampson in the cart at the pet store on his trip home. He didn’t like it but I wonder if it’s because he’d been car sick.? :-(

You look awful cute in that cart Snoopy! Have a great weekend.

  18. I’ve never been in a hardware store, but I have been in a church, PetSmart, and two nursing homes. I am too big to ride around in a cart, but that looks like lots of fun!

  19. The One Named Donna wanted me to be a therapy dog – really badly – but she never could train away some of my bad habits. I think that’s because she didn’t have me as a pup. It’s great when peoples know what they want their dogs to be right from the start and can teach them to behave properly. How awesome that you have peoples like that, instead of peoples who think we are “disposable.”

  21. We agree! We take dogs and cats since they are young in automobiles, shopping carts, pet purses, etc so they get used to various modes of transportation and environments.
