Think I could go a week without Mischief? Not a chance!
I have lots of Mischief still to tell you about, however, today I just wanted to interrupt normal service to tell you about a truly amazing, humble, lady and how she’s making a massive difference to the lives of both Dogs and Veterans.
Let me tell you the story…..
I was contacted earlier this week by the people at Pet Armor to see if I could help them spread the word about Mary Cortani, founder of Operation Freedoms Paws.
She’s in the final 10 in the CNN Global 2012 Hero of the Year Contest – an honor that spotlights “everyday people changing the world.”
The winner receives $250,000 to help their cause. There were over 10,000 global nominations.
As I read about the story I discovered that not only did Mary found this non-profit in Northern California, where I live, she actually runs it in my very town!
A few years ago, by chance, Mary had discovered there was a problem – Many Veterans needed a Service Dog in order to help them try to regain a normal life – there weren’t enough Service Dogs ready – She also knew that many Dogs are in Shelters unable to find their forever home – Mary decided to do something about this and find away to help them all!
I worked with Pet Armor to see up a meeting with Mary and Mum and I went to meet her for coffee. I loved her straight away and gave her a big hug!
What is Operation Freedoms Paws?
Operation Freedoms Paws’ mission is to match war veterans, many with PTSD and other invisible wounds, with shelter dogs. Through a 32-week program, their program trains veterans and others with disabilities with their service dogs as a team. This unique approach leverages the ability of the canine-human relationship to help veterans regain their sense of purpose, worth and value to society and their community.
How are PetArmor® and OFP Working Together?
In September, PetArmor® experienced Mary’s work first hand and captured an amazing video,
Through the video you will be able to see how dogs and veterans train together and ultimately save each other. PetArmor® is working to generate awareness of Operation Freedoms Paws through its social media channels and is seeking to encourage fans, friends, veterans and all pet lovers to vote for Mary Cortani as the 2012 CNN Hero of the Year. If you’re also moved by what Operation Freedoms Paws is accomplishing please vote – Voting ends on November 28 – so we haven’t got long left to vote and spread the word!
Every email address and Facebook user can vote 10 times each day if you like – that’s a lot of votes and could make a huge difference to a lot of lives! Mary would love to expand this program to reach more veterans (and civilians) further afield. What a great way to honor veterans as we approach Veterans Day!
It sure was an honor to meet Mary and Mum and I are making plans to work with her in the future too – Yay!!
Before I go, I can’t resist just sharing one little teenie weenie bit of Mischief with you!! Tee Hee
